New South Wales Report - October 2009

Theft from construction sites
Members may recall last year’s Sun Herald headline with CCF (NSW) calling for NSW Police to take action against the high level of theft from construction sites. This action resulted in a strategic review of operations and CCF was recently invited to discuss the findings of the review at Police Headquarters.
The review has resulted in the formation of an industry taskforce made up of police, insurers, CCF and other stakeholders. This taskforce will continue to meet in order to consider options for an industry standard. Any members who have experienced a high level of theft or who have an interest in this matter are encouraged to contact the CCF (NSW) office.
Policy committees
One of the key tools used by the Federation when dealing with government has been the use of policy committees. These are chaired by a member of the NSW Board, and provide immediate and considered advice to the chief executive and president on issues relating to plant hire, land development, infrastructure, government relations, environment and waste, to name a few.
Nominations and appointments are generally reviewed with each newly elected board and membership is open to both full and associate members. Self nomination should be made to the president via the chief executive’s office.
Just a quick word of thanks….
The New South Wales branch is thrilled at the level of support afforded by key sponsors over the last few months. These sponsors assure that our events can be held in quality venues and be affordable to members of all levels. We would like to thank Impact Personnel/Affinity for their sponsorship of the annual president’s dinner, Coates Hire for its support for the Camden Golf Day and Dial Before You Dig for sponsoring the annual Leader’s Forum.
OH&S forum
Following the success of the CCF Symposium and our industrial relations seminar earlier this year, the Federation will be holding a Civil Construction and Demolition OH&S Seminar on Friday 9 October 2009. This will brief members on moves to nationally harmonise OH&S laws. These policy briefings have proven to be popular resources for members and provide good value for money when compared to similar courses which cost up to $1000.
The cost for members in $120 per person, or $150 for non members. Please register early as we are restricted to 120 delegates.
Farewell Graeme
After five years with the Civil Contractors Federation, and nearly a lifetime of service to the industry, CCF (NSW) farewelled Colin Calrow last month after he elected to retire. Colin’s wife, Annette, is also well known to CCF having spent some 30 years working for long time board member Glenn Fordham.
Colin and Annette will start their retirement with a few well deserved trips, before Colin begins a regular schedule of visits to his south coast hideaway. We wish them both a long and healthy retirement together, although members shouldn’t be alarmed if Colin makes a few discreet visits back to our Northwest offices on a casual basis.
Melbourne Cup luncheon
This year CCF (NSW) will be inviting members to join us at the Melbourne Cup luncheon to be held at the Crowne Plaza, Norwest on Tuesday 3 November. Guests will enjoy an afternoon of fashion, competitions, fine wine and a great buffet. The afternoon will culminate with the big race, after which losers and winners can enjoy a glass or two on the balcony.
The cost of the afternoon is $95 per person (all inclusive). Please register with Sarah at CCF on (02) 9009 4000
Leader’ forum
Members are reminded that that the New South Wales Branch will be holding the Annual CCF Leader’s Forum on Friday 20 November 2009. This year we are delighted to announce the guest speaker at our lunch will be the Minister for Infrastructure Joe Tripodi. Other issues to be addressed include OH&S, workplace relations and theft.
We are grateful to the NSW branch of Dial Before You Dig for its generous sponsorship of this event.
Bauma 2010
Members wishing to join the Bauma 2010 tour, should register their interest with Alan Bird at the NSW branch on (02) 9009 4000 as soon as possible. Whilst the final details of the program are being confirmed over the next few months, we are restricted to only 15 rooms at the preferred Munich Hotel. The tour will then proceed to Spain for a memorable nine night tour from Barcelona to Malaga.
