Civil Train steaming ahead
Civil Train Queensland continues to go from strength to strength with the appointment of a customer service officer and two additional trainer/assessors in the last two months to address the demand we are experiencing in certificate III and in particular certificate IV level qualifications.
Certificate IV qualifications in civil construction supervision and civil construction operations delivered by Civil Train, are primarily being funded by the very successful Productivity Places Program implemented by organisations such as Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) and the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ).
The PPP is a core element of the Australian Government's Skilling Australia for the Future policy. It aims to address higher level skill shortages and increase workforce participation and productivity.
Civil Train Queensland has launched a new look website (www.civiltrainqld.com.au) as part of an integrated marketing plan which is already proving to be a great success. This coupled with the recently implemented web-based records management system, and a planned overhaul of the student management system to a web-based platform, places the business in an excellent position to achieve our aggressive growth plans for the coming years.
And the winner is…
This year’s Industry Leaders and Training Awards, were again a showcase for the Queensland branch, with more than 300 people present to witness the recognition of excellence for our industry’s leading trainees, apprentices and employers. This celebration of training and education has grown each year to become one of the major events on the CCF calendar. Guest speaker for the evening was the state Minister for Education and Training Geoff Wilson.
The awards are an opportunity for members of the CCF and clients of Civil Train, to gather with other stakeholders in education and training, to recognise the outstanding contribution and hard work of apprentices and trainees from within the civil construction industry.
In 2010 there were a record number of nominations received from across the state. The night proved to be an excellent celebration of the work of apprentices and trainees and highlighted the commitment of the industry to training and education.
The award winners were:
Certificate 1 in Resources and Infrastructure Operations Trainee of the Year
Chloe Fattore, Yeppoon Secondary School. The judges felt that Chloe showed maturity and understanding beyond her years. Her willingness to pursue this industry even when facing adversity was very commendable.
Certificate III in Pipe Laying Trainee of the Year
Gareth Teggart, The BMD Group. Gareth demonstrated a breadth of understanding of this qualification. His trainer and employer both rank him very highly in his skill level.
Certificate III in Road Constructions Trainee of the Year
Michael Rudzitis, McIlwain Civil Engineering Pty Ltd. Michael’s scores from both trainer and the employer were exceptional and based on his career progression to date, the judges felt he will be a true industry champion in no time.
Certificate III in Civil Construction (Plant Operations) Apprentice of the Year
Matthew Houston, Civil Contractors (Aust) Pty Ltd. Matthew’s scores reflected how highly he was acknowledged by his employer and trainer alike. His statement ‘I can now do more than just operate plant’ demonstrated how training can improve skills and self confidence.
Certificate III in Bridge Construction Trainee of the Year
Joe Styles, Probuild Civil (QLD) Pty Ltd. Joe demonstrated understanding and initiative and paid great attention to detail, all of which are keys to effective bridge building.
Certificate IV in Civil Supervision Trainee of the Year
James Hudson, The Horizon Alliance – John Holland Pty Ltd. James demonstrated that training at any age is beneficial and his courage and strength is inspirational.
Outstanding Commitment to Training and Skill Development (Individual)
Kylie Jarrard, Seymour Whyte Constructions Pty Ltd.
Outstanding Commitment to Training and Skill Development (Employer)
Nyholt Constructions Pty Ltd
Construction Skills Queensland Encouragement Award
Chloe Fattore, Yeppoon Secondary School. Judges chose to give Chloe an encouragement award, as they recognised the barriers she had to overcome to get this far. They commended her on her strength and vision and were sure they would be hearing more about her in the future. “With your achievements so far you are already a role model for women in the industry,” they said.
2010 Boral Trainee/Apprentice of the Year
James Hudson, The Horizon Alliance – John Holland. The judges said James’s nomination inspired them. They felt that his success in completing Certificate 4 in Civil (Supervision) as an existing worker who had to overcome some ingrained learning, clearly demonstrated what can be achieved with recognised training in the civil sector
President’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Civil Construction Industry
Mick Power AM, BMD Group. Founder of the BMD group in 1979, Mike Power has taken the BMD Group to be Australia’s largest privately owned civil, construction and urban development organisation and the third biggest family owned business in Queensland.
The company operates from Brisbane with state branches across Australia. Family owned and operated, BMD has enjoyed strong and consistent growth. It is heavily involved in community projects, sport and the health and wellbeing of its staff.
