CCF Tasmania is moving
After nearly eight years at Rosny Park, we are moving to bigger and better offices. We have out grown our current shared office location and this move will provide for greater opportunities for CCF and its members to grow the business and support services to new highs.
Thanks go to G & A Consulting and Kelly Civil Contracting P/L for their support and provision of a supported office and for the support of the CCF Tasmanian Branch and we look forward to a continued working relationship in our new office.
Earth Awards
The Tasmanian Earth Awards have been held and a great night was had by all. This year we held a sold out event with 400 people in attendance. We received great entries from contractors for the judges to consider in each of the Earth Award categories entered. Five entries reached finalist status and the task for our judges was particularly difficult in order to arrive with a winner in Category One. Details of the awards will be in the special Earth Awards feature in the September issue.
Special thanks go to our judges this year, they being chief judge Rob Batchelor, assisted by Adrian Granger. Thanks guys and I look forward to working with you again next year.
The winning entrants in Category One were Gradco P/L and its Blanche Beach Sand Transfer.
The project consisted of the transfer of an estimated 215,000m³ of sand at Blanche Beach, St Helens using heavy earthmoving equipment. The sand was taken from the foreshore and transferred to the low lying, less vegetated dune areas adjacent to the foreshore. These new dunes were then revegetated using “slash” sourced on site.
The winner of Category Two was Shaw Contracting and its Lower Lake Margaret Power Station Pipeline.
This project included a mix of blending two technologies and included a crucial penstock section leading to the Lake Margaret power station inlet valve. A decision was made to replace the old steel pipeline with fibreglass reinforced plastic, leading to a world first in the above ground use of this type of composite pipe.
In Category Three, the Hazell Bros Group won again with the Lake Margaret Upper Pipeline Redevelopment
The project involved the design and construction of a 2.2km long, 1.2m diameter wood stave pipeline, with materials sourced by International Tank & Pipe Company of Portland, Oregon, USA. ITP also supplied an expert supervisor to oversee the construction of the replacement pipeline.
DIER Annual Safety at Roadworks Award
Hazell Bros Group was awarded the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources (DIER) Safety at Roadworks annual award, designed and donated by Eye Spy Signs and presented by the Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure Lara Giddings.
Hazell Bros was chosen to receive this award for work on the Sorell Link Road – from the Tasman Highway (Gordon St) to the Arthur Highway (Cole St).
The nomination particularly highlighted that the methodology used by the contractor ensured that a high quality project was delivered, during an extremely wet winter; safely and on time. The methodology was flexible and continually improved to take into account road user needs, efficient scheduling, delay minimisation, technical solutions to issues and good practice communication. The traffic flow through Sorell during the construction phase was never compromised and any forced stoppages were minimal and less than the times stipulated in the contract documents.
Sponsor thanks
We thank our National Earth Awards Sponsors; Hitachi Construction Machinery (Australia) – 100 years old, Refuelling Solutions, your refuelling specialists and OAMPS, your specialist insurer for our industry, for their ongoing support of CCF and Earth Awards; our local major sponsors, Coates Hire and Dial Before You Dig. We also thank the many local companies for their continued support of CCF Tas.
Special thanks to Kayla and Mel for their assistance on the night and in the lead up to the event and of course to everyone else that played a part, no matter how minor, in ensuring our Earth Awards were a great night for all.
Next year’s Tasmanian Earth Awards will be held one week later, 22nd July 2011, at Wrest Point to allow for more efficient planning nationally.
Expressions of interest are now open for local sponsorship opportunities and if you are working on a project that you believe needs to be recognised next year, now is the time to start planning your entry.
Contact this office for further information on our new number, 03 6223 6737.
