Claiming fuel tax credits
Members are reminded that new legislation has been enacted, which limits the time in which fuel tax credits can be claimed, to within a four year period. The four year limit expires four years after the due date for the activity statement for that period.
The new law applies to activity statements lodged or issued after 1 July 2010. There are some exceptions but as this is a very complex area, please go to www.ato.gov.au and look under Business GST essentials or see your adviser.

Fair Work Australia
As part of the Fair Work reforms, the federal government introduced a Fair Dismissal Code for small businesses, that is those with less than 15 employees. Compliance with the code was stated to demonstrate that a dismissal was fair and a checklist was provided for small employers to follow and to use as evidence that the dismissal was fair.
Last year the federal government issued a set of fair work principles (FWP) which set out requirements for an organisation to qualify for work funded by the federal government.
