Cases new 580 and 590 Super R series 3 backhoes are built to combine stability in all terrains, with a choice of either mechanical PowerShuttle or PowerShift transmissions.

Both are equipped with powerful 4.5 litre turbo engines. The 580SR is fitted with a Tier 3 engine rated at 72kW, while the 590 is powered by an electronically-controlled engine rated at 82kW and provides a torque boost of 516Nm to pull through difficult conditions.

A Case spokesman said the hydraulics had been designed with ease of serviceability in mind, with three pressure control checks grouped together, making an easier and more immediate diagnosis possible in any situation.

Ease of service extended to daily maintenance, with a tilting hood providing easy engine access from ground level. Sight gauges allowed for easy and quick daily checks of hydraulic oil and coolant levels, he said.

The electronically-controlled engine was also compatible with the Case Electronic Service Tool (EST) for rapid diagnosis and minimum downtime.

When used effectively, EST can halve the time taken to diagnose and rectify a performance incident. One of the main benefits is being able to isolate troublesome and intermittent incidents by monitoring the operation of particular circuits or sensors during machine operation, he said.

The EST also assisted Case service technicians in locating relevant components using screen images.

Operator comfort was enhanced, with an electronic foot and hand throttle, while one touch idle control, simplified operations. The cab featured excellent visibility with floor-to-roof glass and the ergonomically placed controls ensured the operator could easily concentrate on the job at hand.
