One of the world’s best-selling mobile lighting towers, has been brought back into production to help improve site safety, as civil construction contractors battle to complete billion dollar stimulus-funded infrastructure projects after dark.

Originally launched in 2002, more than 900 Allight Urban lighting towers were built in Australia for construction and road work projects. Of those, more than 200 were exported.
Much of the tower’s success stemmed from its durability, small footprint and sound levels from the generator of just 62dBA (at 7m). This quickly made it the tower of choice for projects such as metropolitan road works; where noise restrictions posed a problem for many other tower brands.
Though Allight mothballed the Urban last year to make way for its heavier duty successor, the scale of recent demand from contractors and equipment rental businesses, has prompted the Perth-based manufacturer to plug the model back into its production schedule for next year.
GM for manufactured products and marketing, Paul Sowerby explained: “The Urban made many friends across construction and road work projects, and we took the decision to replace it with our more robust NH6000 lighting tower, only because customers said they wanted a tower which could cope as well in light mining environments as in construction.
“News of the Urban’s withdrawal seemed to send shockwaves through the construction sector, and we were inundated with calls from customers trying to get their hands on the model prior to the end of production. When we evaluated the scale of that demand, we decided to re-launch an enhanced Urban to sit alongside our NH6000 and smaller NM4000 towers.”
Just as quiet as its predecessor, the 2009 Urban is also expected to win the environmental vote. It is powered by a clean, quiet, fuel efficient Perkins 403D-11 diesel engine, meeting all requirements of EU Stage IIIA and EPA Tier 4 emissions legislation, and comes with Allight’s fuel spill containment tray as standard. It also features four efficient 1000W metal halide lamps, light tilt and hydraulic 360° mast rotation.
“We tell ourselves that this business is all about analysing the customer’s needs and devising a solution to meet them,” Sowerby said. “Normally, assessing a product’s growth prospects is a bit hit and miss. But at the moment, the biggest head-scratcher is to how to make enough Urbans. Needless to say, that’s not a challenge we mind having to juggle with.”
