Line marker carries, applies 200˚ paint safely

Although the quantities of extremely hot semi solids are vastly different, modern road line marking is up there with road paving, for demanding safety awareness by operators.

So a new line-marking truck, designed and built by Arc Industrial Systems for Carter Linemarking, uses advanced control and safety systems to ensure it does its job efficiently and safely.
The truck carries a stainless steel, heated pressure vessel, holding up to 2t of plastic line-marking paint. It is sprayed onto the road at 200° and 60psi. It also carries two smaller, non-heated pressure vessels, which contain the glass beads. They are sprayed onto the still-liquid paint at 40psi.
With a large quantity of pressurised hot paint, and two additional pressure vessels on board, the safety not only of the truck’s operators, but of the general public had to be assured.
Arc’s John Engelbert says the success of the fit-out, the first to feature this level of safety control, is the result of a combination of experience and high-quality components. “When I was designing the safety system, I discussed the requirements with Treotham Automation’s Raju Kotecha, who recommended the Samos PRO safety controller for three Euchner safety interlocks.”
The system allows any one or more of the tanks to be opened for refilling, independent of the status of the other tanks, as long as the pressure has been evacuated. The operator simply releases the pressure with a ball valve. At ambient pressure the locks are released, but if the pressure sensors detect pressure, or there is a component failure, the vessel cannot be opened.
