The highpoint of the northern summer for the extractive and heavy construction industries arrives once again at Tarmac’s Hillhead Quarry, near Buxton, Derbyshire from 22-24 June.

About 430 UK and international suppliers of plant, equipment, materials and services will be showing off their latest products, innovations and technological developments, many of which will be seen for the first time in Britain.
The all-encompassing nature of Hillhead 2010 is reflected in Sandvik’s line-up of brand-new equipment. In action at the show will be the new QE440 tracked scalper, the DI550 down-the-hole drill rig and the BR3288 and BR4099 hydraulic breakers for quarrying applications. Also on show will be the new QI440 tracked impact crusher, QA331 tracked screener, BA2323Basic Line breaker and the BR111/222/333 compact breaker range.
Terex Finlay will be displaying no fewer than 10 tracked mobile crushing, screening and washing machines at this year’s show. Among them will be the brand new J-1480 jaw crusher and the C-1550 cone crusher. Both of these machines will be working in the demonstration area and on static display on the company’s stand.
To accompany their existing Rapidmix range of continuous mixing plants, Rapid International will be showing their new mobile batching plants, the Rapidbatch 70 and 120. The completely self-contained units, offer cost-effective on-site batch mixing in remote locations, with production rates of 70m3 per hour and 120m3 per hour, respectively.
Innovation in Action is the focus for JCB this year, and it will be clearly on show in the demonstration area, where the company’s flagship heavy line range will be carrying out quarrying, demolition and recycling duties. Performing recycling and waste-handling tasks will be the JS200 materials handler Wastemaster and the 456 Wastemaster wheeled loaders. Also lining up to be put through their paces, will be a JS360 tracked excavator using a pulveriser attachment, and a JS220 powering the RW100 JCB Rockwheel hydraulic cutter attachment.
Scania will be highlighting their new EU Stage IIIB and US Tier 4i emission standards-compliant industrial engine range. Based on the company’s proven 9-, 13- and 16-litre power units, the latest range features the Scania Engine Management System, XPI (extra-high-pressure injection) and SCR (selective catalytic reduction). The 9-litre engine has a power output ranging from 202–294kW (275–400hp), while the 13-litre unit has an output from 257–368kW (350–500hp) and the 16-litre engine has an output between 404–515kW (550–700hp).
A 9t Powerswivel dumper, designed to perform safely and efficiently in difficult site conditions, will be exhibited by Thwaites. Powered by a 86kW Stage 3a Perkins turbocharged and after-cooled engine that produces 418Nm of torque, the machine features a newly designed chassis offering all-round visibility for the operator, while its extended wheelbase provides increased stability. Thwaites will also be promoting their smallest product to date – the Micro 300 compact dumper – which will be shown in standard form, as well as with optional floatation wheels and skip extensions.
Volvo Construction Equipment will be taking an even bigger stand than usual to showcase their construction equipment and road machinery, some of which will be on display for the first time in the UK. Taking centre stage on the stand will be the AGB6870 paver, the new MW500 milling machine and the latest SD130 soil compaction roller.
Also featured will be the DD24 asphalt roller and Volvo Truck products, including the first public showing of the new Volvo FMX construction truck. The benefits of the company’s recently launched Eco Operator initiative will also feature heavily, with visitors to the stand invited to take the ‘Eco Challenge’.
Wirtgen will also be taking a larger stand to showcase a range of new equipment. New to the UK and offering the latest in milling technology will be the Wirtgen W210 road planer with its unique twin-engine concept. Other new machines will include the 9t Hamm HD90+ tandem roller with XXL cab, the Hamm GRW 280 pneumatic-tyred roller and Hamm’s newly developed range of small tandems. New equipment from Vgele will include the1803-2 paver as well as smaller tracked/wheeled units, while the new Kleemann MC110Z jaw crusher will complete the line-up on the Wirtgen stand.
Topcon will be showcasing their latest range of machine control products and solutions for the construction market, including a new state-of-the-art hardware platform for business owners and project supervisors and the latest-generation 3DMC2 system, which uses inertial and gyroscope technology to allow fine grading down to millimetre-level accuracy with unprecedented speed.
Concrete equipment specialists Utranazz will be using the show to launch their versatile mobile volumetric concrete mixer (MVBP). The Hydromix MVBP features a special RORO system that provides multiple mounting options. The unit works completely autonomously and is equipped with its own engine, hydraulic pumps, water-system and loading/off-loading legs. It utilises a highly accurate computer-controlled weighing system to produce accurate concrete mixes, allowing the user to achieve QSRMC accreditation.
Among the line-up of machines on the Powerscreen stand will be a number of new and recently launched products, including the Warrior 2400, Pegson XA750, mobile wash recycle plant, Warrior 800, Pegson XH500 and Pegson XH320. A sneak preview of the Pegson 1500 Maxtrak, which is destined to be one of the largest tracked mobile cone crushers on the global market and is still in its pre-launch testing phase, is also promised.
Earthmover Tyres will be introducing the tyre monitor system (TMS) to the UK. This wireless tyre pressure gauge and monitoring system has been developed for large off-road vehicles. Designed and supplied by AM Bromley, a company formed in 1997 by engineers who worked on the early concepts of tyre pressure monitoring systems, TMS provides tyre pressure and temperature data to allow tyres to be maintained for optimal performance, reducing downtime and increasing productivity.
Once again Bell Equipment will be showcasing their latest ranges of mobile plant, including the E-series wheel loaders and the MkVI D-series articulated dump trucks, while the UK arm of the company will announce the launch of Bell Assure – a package of combined products and services, designed to provide customers with flexibility of choice to allow them to run their fleet more efficiently.
Euroflo Fluid Handling will be exhibiting the newly released Bravo range of heavy-duty slurry pumps from Grindex. These units range in size from 4.7kW up to 70kW and have wear parts manufactured in 26% chrome iron for maximum wear resistance. Another new product making its debut at the show will be the Grindex Master SH pump, which is capable of lifting up to 80m.
Among the exhibits on the Kubota stand will be the new reduced-tail-swing and tight-tail-swing excavators in the 4-6-tonnes class, featuring larger deluxe cabins, a new direct-injection engine, auto-idling and auto travel shift.
Brendon Powerwashers will be launching the HWBBW30KLN+ES, one of four new hot-water, high-pressure, fully autonomous bowser washers available in trailer or skid-mounted versions. The HWBBW range is offered with maximum pressures of 238 bar or 340 bar and a flow rate of 12.5 litres/min. Engine options include Yanmar low-noise diesels and Honda petrol engines, including the iGX440 with automatic throttle control for quieter operation and reduced fuel consumption.
AP Pavers will be exhibiting the Bomag BF 300C tracked paver, with a paving width of 1.7-3.4m (4m with extensions); and the Bomag BF 300P wheeled paver, with a paving width of 1.7-3.4m (4m with extensions), for the first time at Hillhead.
Metso Minerals will be presenting their newly developed track-mounted Lokotrack LT110C primary crusher. Powered by a low-emission 310kW Cat C13 engine and weighing 58 tonnes, the compact machine is built around the proven Nordberg C10 jaw crusher, which has a feed opening of 1,100mm x 850mm. Depending on the feed system selected, the LT110C can be equipped with a standard 6m3 feed hopper or an optional 9m3 version. The compact machine measures 15.6m in length, 3.0m in width and 3.85m in height for ease of transportation between sites.
Gearing up to meet the Tier 4 Interim emissions standards, Cummins will be displaying their new range of engines. On display for the first time to the UK market will be the QSB 6.7, QSL 9, QSX 11.9 and QSX 15 Tier 4 Interim engines.
Case will be exhibiting and demonstrating products from across their full product range, including several new machines on display for the first time, such as the CX210BMH excavator and the 410 and 440 models from their skid-steer loader line-up. The company will also be showing their latest wheel loaders, including the largest model in the Case range, the 1221E, which will be hard at work on the quarry face, as well as the 721EXT, 821EXR and 921E on static display.
Regular Hillhead exhibitors Dig A Crusher will be showing three representative models from their brand new Rotar grab line-up specifically designed for rehandling duties across a broad range of industry sectors.
Also making a repeat Hillhead visit are ACE Plant, this time with two new products on display and demonstration. First is the company’s versatile new mobile dust-suppression unit, Dust Fighter, which features a powerful electric fan that projects a fine mist up to 60m. Also making its debut will be ACE Plant’s new communications tower developed for use on remote or sensitive sites, or for the supervision of lone workers. The all-in-one, self-contained unit provides tower lights, CCTV, a PA system and Wi-Fi capabilities.
