Farmers, Greens branch out on lines

The Greens are supporting a campaign to save New South Wales branch lines, says the NSW Farmers' Association.

Greens met with farmers in Greenethorpe, near Grenfell, to discuss the state of 15 branch lines which are “on the verge of collapse,” the association said.

Its grains committee chairman, executive member and Rand graingrowerAngus Macneil, said he welcomed the Greens' input on the issue.

“The association is concerned that if the government does not put money towards repairing the lines, the impact will be detrimental not only for farmers, but also for the environment and road safety,” he said.

“The Greens have also listened to our warning that an extra 8million truck tyres will have to be dumped, buried or burnt every year in NSW, if the 15 rail lines are closed.”

Boree Creek farmer and former deputy prime minister Tim Fischer, is served by the next towards the north branch line 50km north of Rand.

A passionate rail supporter he too is lending his considerable support to the line retention moves. Fischer is a recent appointee as a director of Freightlink, the company that operates trains between Adelaide and Darwin.
