4000 attend vibrant ACE in Melbourne

More than 4000 visitors, slightly fewer than two years ago, turned out for the Australian Construction Equipment expo at Sandown Park racecourse, Melbourne in late February.

But it was about 30% bigger, and judging by the number of sales made during the three day event, the impact a smaller attendance was insignificant.

In terms of numbers, Perth-based Worldwide Construction Machinery's sales were most significant. It sold half a dozen Chinese-made wheel loaders and WCM and Sunward excavators from its stand including a new to Australia, 17t Foton wheel loader with forks for $153,000. The firm also sold a 10t Foton wheel loader for $88,400. Both deals included 12month/1000hour warranties.

Another major sale was completed by Sandvik for a $100,000 Panterra 1100 top hammer drill rig, while AugerTorque, an Australian company exhibiting at Bauma in Germany next month, sold a trio of skid steer-mounted planers.

Also new to Australia there were China-made Lishide excavators, articulated loaders and rollers and Shantui bulldozers shown by Trackquip p/l. Excavators on display were 13 and 22t machines.

Although Case Construction Equipment will not have its big release of its new CXB excavators until Bauma next month, it chose ACE to display the four-model range and in particular the 117kW CX210B which it had already sold.

In the same vein it showed the latest additions to its compact skid steer loader range, the 420 and 440CT. And to commemorate the 50 th anniversary of the Case loader backhoe, the company literally unveiled a specially-designed all black commemorative 580 series 2 machine at the event. It features frosted window treatment of the original Case 320 in one window and in the other a futuristic model.

A detailed round up of ACE will be in the April issue.

1. In a multi million dollar deal, Wirtgen Australia has sold 50 Hamm 3520 rollers to Coates Hire. Here Wirtgen Australia's Geoff Southwell and Germany-based member of the Wirtgen board Reinhold Baisch, are pictured with one of the machines on display at ACE. The 20t rollers have been Australianised with local air conditioning, and have sensors connected to indicating lights in front of the operator, to show when the optimum degree of compaction has been reached for a given site. The 3520 is powered by a 147kW Deutz BF6M2012.
