NSW calls tenders for inland port

The New South Wales Government says it has begun a search for new tenants and operators for the greatly anticipated Enfield Intermodal Logistics Centre in Sydneys west.
NSW ports minister Joe Tripodi said the inland port would help achieve the Governments promised goal of moving 40% of shipping containers by rail.
Request for proposals from private sector operators and tenants for the Enfield facility were due to begin on November 26 with construction due to start in late 2009, he said.
The $150m development, on the 60ha former Enfield marshalling yards site, will double Sydney's current intermodal capacity.
The site would also include a 12ha terminal catering for up to 300,000 containers a year to be moved by rail from Port Botany, 8ha of empty container storage, 7ha of distribution centre and warehousing space and about 4.4ha of light industrial/commercial floor space.
The development of the centre will bring a range of benefits to the logistics chain including helping move more containers closer to their final destination by rail, in a way that is more efficient and environmentally friendly, Tripodi said.
Development of the new hub has been a political hot potato for several years because of strong opposition from Enfield residents to potential increases in truck traffic.
