NT most active for new civil contracting projects

Shovel ready is a concept that only the Northern Territory seems to have embraced, as far as civil engineering projects are concerned says Hays, Australia’s biggest specialist recruitment consultancy. |
|
In its latest quarterly civil engineering employment report, it says the NT is the only government which has begun to implement investment in infrastructure, to combat the global financial crisis. The Territory government has undertaken to spend $1.3bn in this area.
We list here and in the July print edition of Earthmover and Civil Contractor, in Contracts Let, eight tenders let by the Department of Planning & Infrastructure and one by Darwin City Council.
They are all for road works and total $33m for five projects to be completed by the end of this calendar year. The other four are to be finished by mid July next year.
Hays notes in its report that there is strong demand in the NT for site managers and estimators. But it notes that demand for all job types in civil contracting will strengthen in coming quarters, as other governments get their projects shovel ready. In fact the survey expects this quarter to offer more work for all types of civil contracting.
Senior executive search consultant at recruiter Interlogic, Matthew Jack, said expectations that there would be significant new civil contracting projects coming on line by now, had been heightened by the federal infrastructure fund, state government announcements about planned upgrades and capital works, and more recently, promises of even greater capital expenditure in the federal budget, had come to practically nothing.
“Everyone is still sitting on their hands; nothing has happened,” Jack said.
The only active employment areas identified by Hays are major capital works projects under way at various water authjorities and at Victoria’s desalination plant. There is some activity too in the wind turbine erection area too because they don’t generally impinge on buildings or urban areas
