John Holland wins gold bridge award

Judges of the 2009 Austroads Bridge Awards, selected John Holland for the overall gold award, and the large bridges category, for its delivery of the Eleanor Schonell Bridge in Brisbane.

They announced the award at the 7th Austroads Bridge Conference in Auckland in mid August.
The 390m bridge links Dutton Park with the University of Queensland over the Brisbane River. Construction started in January 2005 and finished two months ahead of schedule in December 2006. It is the first Australian bridge to be exclusively designed for pedestrians, buses and cyclists, with the final design adopting a significant number of environmental design features.
The project’s latest win heads a long list of previous awards, including the 2006 Safety Excellence Award from the Queensland Major Contractors Association and the Gold Award for Excellence from the Association of Consulting Engineers Australia. The project was also a finalist for the 2007 Australian Construction Achievement Award run by the Australian Constructors Association.
John Holland was the design/build contractor for the $56m project, working closely with GHD, Brisbane City Council and the University of Queensland, to ensure delivery within budget and ahead of schedule. The project team also exceeded all original safety, environmental and quality targets.
“The bridge demonstrates the best in design, engineering and construction practices,” said John Holland’s Ggroup MD Glenn Palin. “I congratulate the project team, particularly project director David Balmer, for this outstanding achievement.”
John Holland’s northern region GM Chris Evans, said the project highlights John Holland’s ability to develop innovative construction solutions in the delivery of highly technical civil infrastructure. “The team worked closely with GHD and Brisbane City Council, to develop construction solutions that improved on project delivery targets.”
