Dam levels will not affect desal plant’s operations
Sydney Water will run its new desalination plant at close to capacity, during a two year proving period, after it starts operating this summer.
SWs chief executive Kerry Schott, said the plant would produce about 25GL this financial year, before ramping up to 75GL the following year and 85GL or 16% of Sydneys estimated water needs in 2011-12.
The cost of running the desalination plant with renewable power has been estimated at about $73m a year.
She said it would operate at a high level initially to ensure its long term reliability, so would not deviate if dams were overflowing. Currently the dams are at 62% capacity.
