Soft soil stymies Airport Link’s progress
Earth to be excavated in Brisbane’s Kedron, for access ramps to Queensland’s $4.8bn Airport Link, has been deemed too soft to handle.
Instead BrisConnections construction partner Thiess John Holland, has proposed sinking a 42m deep by 13m wide shaft on government owned land at Wooloowin to make room for two roadheader machines.
Extra costs, expected to run into millions, will be borne by TJH. However if the plans for the shaft are rejected the Airport Link will not eventuate in time for its scheduled opening in mid 2012.
Infrastructure minister Stirling Hinchcliffe, said if the changes were approved, the extra work would generate an extra 220 jobs. I certainly regret this has to happen, he said.
BrisConnections which is building the 6.7km Airport Link toll road, has encountered plenty of controversy because of the partly unpaid nature of its listed securities.
They plunged to 1c each late last year and retail investors bought many of them on line without the benefit of share broker advice. That was costly because they didnt realise each unit incurred a yet to pay $2 liability.
