Australia imported 1689 units of heavy machinery in October, up from 1299 units in September, the Australian freight forwarder’s heavy machinery index showed.
Excavators (less than 12 tonnes in weight) led the way in October with 459 units, or 27% of the overall imports tally.
Most categories continued to see a healthy increase with crushers jumping 358% from September to 55 units, scrapers increasing 267% to 11 units, wheel loaders up 74% to 331 units and road making/paving machinery increasing 188% to 124 units.
Despite the rise in numbers, the value of imported machines slipped from $180m in September to $149m in October, representing an average value of $50,000 per unit, the figures showed.
