With plants in both Melton and Sunshine in Melbourne’s north west, Westkon Precast was ideally placed to make and deliver pre stressed concrete beams, to Melbourne’s newly opened (2009) $331m Deer Park bypass bridge and road project.

In August, the project won a Victorian Civil Contractors Federation Earth Award.
One of the major items was prestressed T-Roff bridge beams, a speciality of Westkon for years. Once produced solely from the Sunshine plant, a large new facility at Melton, enabled more and much larger beams to be produced, handled and stored. Lifting capacity in standard configuration is up to 100t with up to 100 large beams being able to be stored ahead of delivery.
129 beams were made for this project in parallel with 349 beams for another project, all cast over 10 months. Sizes ranged from 1000mm deep up to mighty 1800mm deep beams, weighing in at up to 96t each. Smaller beams, that is those shallower than 1350mm, were produced at Sunshine while deeper ones came out of Melton.
Along with the beams Westkon was able to bring to the table, its other capabilities by supplying well over 100 very heavily reinforced (N-Bar) wing wall and fender wall panels, as well as almost 1000 parapets, half barriers and on and off-structure barriers
Due to the self contained nature of its various production areas, Westkon was able to absorb the Deer Park project’s requirements into its regular casting program. That meant production of structural and architectural panels, hollowcore and associated products such as columns and inverted T beams, carried on without major disruption.
Although this large project pushed the capacity of both plants, Westkon was able to achieve excellent productivity and quality and the results are there for all to see heading into or out of Melbourne’s west.
