Brisbane Airport Flyover to open early
|
The final bridge segment on the new 750m Brisbane Airport Flyover was installed last weekend, bringing completion of the $327m Airport Roundabout upgrade project one step closer. The Flyover is expected to open its eastbound lanes to cars in October, 13 months before the original scheduled completion date of November 2011. |

Thiess John Holland project director Gordon Ralph congratulated the project team of 400 people who have worked day and night over the past 6 months to build the 20m tall bridge structure.
“All four lanes of the flyover will be progressively opened after November with the bridge expected to be fully operational at least six months before the November 2011 date,” Ralph said.
Since March, motorists travelling near the Airport Roundabout have witnessed the progress of the Airport Flyover as the 436 segments weighing up to 52t, were installed over the top of the Gateway Motorway overpass from East West Arterial Road to Airport Drive.
A balanced cantilever construction methodology was used to minimise disruption to traffic travelling on the busy Airport Roundabout and to local businesses, Ralph said.
Each segment was prefabricated at the Airport Link’s Pinkenba precast facility “a complex task achieved in record time,” he said.
The focus will now shift to finishing work for the flyover. That includes the installation of concrete barriers, lights, safety screens, asphalt surfacing and line marking, as well as construction of the fast diamond intersection which will ultimately replace the airport roundabout.”
The Airport Flyover will connect with the Airport Link toll road from entry and exit ramps located on East West Arterial Road, allowing drivers to choose a faster way to travel from the CBD to Brisbane Airport avoiding up to 18 sets of lights. It is expected to save motorists more than 10 minutes on trips to Brisbane Airport during peak periods.
The project involves:
Replacing the existing Gateway Motorway overpass at the roundabout with a new fourlane
overpass;
Constructing a new fourlane 750m long bridge linking East West Arterial Road and Airport
Drive over the Gateway Motorway overpass;
Replacing the existing roundabout with a high capacity signalised intersection;
Improved connections to the airport precinct, the Gateway Motorway and Kingsford Smith Drive;
Widening of EastWest Arterial Road to three traffic lanes in each direction; and
Surface road improvements to Airport Drive.
Design and construction of the Airport Roundabout Upgrade is being undertaken by Thiess John Holland, in conjunction with delivery of the Airport Link and the Northern Busway (Windsor to Kedron) projects.
