Work starts on Sunbury rail electrification
O’Donnell Griffin and the Laing O’Rourke Electrification Joint Venture, have joined the Victorian Department of Transport and rail operators Metro Trains and V/Line, in a $270m alliance to design and deliver electrification of the rail line from Sydenham to Sunbury near Melbourne.
The distance to be electrified is 15.1km with Sunbury located 39.5 rail line kilometres north west of Melbourne.
Work started on the project, a key part of the $38bn Victorian Transport Plan on Monday, following Public Transport Minister Martin Pakula turning the first sod on the project last Saturday. Electric trains are expected to run from Sunbury in 2012.
Project work will include upgrading Sunbury and Diggers Rest stations, to provide improved facilities compliant with disability guidelines, refurbished waiting rooms, more seating and shelters on the platforms and passenger information displays providing real time updates on train services that are expected to more than double.
The project is expected to employ up to 240 people during construction.
