Senate gives wind farm projects confidence
Passage just before the winter break through the Senate, of amendments to the renewable energy target which requires 20% of energy to come from renewable resources by 2020, has restored wind farm builders’ plans.
One that will now definitely go ahead is AGL Energy’s $800m Macarthur wind farm, 260km west of Melbourne. AGL MD Michael Fraser said the Senate move would allow the company to go ahead with confidence.
With its joint venture partner Meridian Energy, it plans to fast track final approvals. When finished it will be one of the biggest wind farms in the southern hemisphere.
Installed capacity will be 365MW with a total of 174 Suzlon S88 turbines. The wind farm will generate about 945GWh of power a year. The approximate time frame for the construction of the wind farm is 3 years.
