Proposed bushfire vulnerable subdivision ruled out

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal has ruled a 16-lot subdivision at St Andrews, about 40km north east of Melbourne, should not go ahead because of the risk of bushfires.

While the Country Fire Authority was not concerned about the site’s closeness to a national park and narrow single road access or more importantly egress, VCAT was. The steep property also faces north which means fires could advance very rapidly from that direction on a bad day.
But Victorian Planning Minister Justin Madden, said the government would await the findings of the royal commission into Victoria’s 2009 Black Saturday bushfires, before assessing whether any changes to planning arrangement in areas judged vulnerable to bushfires were necessary.
The protracted royal commission is expected to report at the end of July.
