Parsons Brinckerhoff grounded for Fly-Free Week

— filed under: ,

Monday 31 May marked the start of an inaugural Fly-Free Week at Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) in Australia and New Zealand. Director of operations Shaun Nugent said the new initiative is part of the firm’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 20% in 2010.

"Fly-Free Week encourages staff to use office technology such as video and teleconferencing services in lieu of booking work-related air travel. It will save substantial business costs and raise awareness across the company about the environmental costs associated with air travel. “It also signals revolutionary change in business leadership and behaviour because all the directors are on board. We also hope to gain insights from this initiative into how we can continue to improve our performance as a sustainable business. It is estimated PB’s Fly-Free Week will:

  • Save more than 250 flights;
  • Result in 40,000 less air miles travelled;
  • Eliminate 80t of CO2 emissions;
  • Save $150,000 in travel-related costs, and
  • Save 750 person-hours in the air. PB’s environmental management system manager Kim Sammut said air travel currently accounts for nearly 70% of PB’s carbon footprint.
