Anketell Point to be Pilbara’s new deepwater port

The Western Australian Government has backed the construction of a deepwater iron ore port at Anketell Point, 30km east of Karratha.

The state government will spend $3.5m over three years for the planning and preparation phase of the multi-user port, which is expected to have an export capacity of 350mtpa, an industrial area of more than 1400ha and a corridor for transport and services.
WA premier Colin Barnett said the Anketell port would provide new opportunities to export more iron ore and other minerals.
“In 2008/09 the Pilbara exported more than 326m tonnes of bulk commodities, mainly iron ore. This is forecast to reach more than 530mtpa by 2015 and as much as 750mtpa by 2020.”
API management, Fortescue Metals and China Metallurgical Group were potential foundation investors in the new facility, Barnett said.
“The government will work with these companies or an infrastructure provider to develop the project, with plans to commence operations by 2015,” he said.
Anketell was first identified as a potential iron ore port in the 1970s. The previous Labor government had identified Ronsard Island, near Dampier, as its preferred site but the Liberal-National government scrapped the idea.
