Highway 1 duplication to extend 23km west of Geelong

A $220m extension of duplicated road along 23km of the Princes Highway west of Geelong, started last Friday.

Extending from Waurn Ponds on the edge of Geelong to Winchelsea on Highway 1, the work is expected to be completed by 2014. The actual starting point will be the Geelong Ring Road near Draytons Road at Mount Duneed and it will finish at Lennox Street, Winchelsea.

Funded by federal and state governments, the duplication was promised by political parties decades ago. When completed it will provide two lanes each way, divided by a centre median strip with protected turn lanes, median breaks and service roads, to provide safe access at key locations.
