Sydney Water wins project management awards

Sydney Water’s desalination project and new operational facilities at Potts Hill have won the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) awards.

Sydney Water MD Kerry Schott said the AIPM awards recognise Sydney Water’s continued success at delivering major projects on time and on budget, and the positive financial and engineering benefits of its private sector partnerships.

“The desalination project won the category for construction/engineering in excess of $100m, and the new facilities at Potts Hill were successful in the Organisation/Change Management category,” Dr Schott said.
The awards followed the Water Delivery Alliance, of which Sydney Water was a member, winning in late June, the category five NSW CCF Earth Award for a project valued at more than $75m.

“The desalination project is the largest water project in NSW since Warragamba Dam was built 50 years ago, and will help secure Sydney's water supply as the population increases and rainfall becomes less dependable,” Schott said. “The project was delivered on time and $89m under budget, and with an exemplary safety performance.

“The project team comprised Sydney Water, the Blue Water joint venture which built the plant and the Water Delivery Alliance which built the 18km pipeline. Sydney Water was also supported by its advisers including GHD/ Fitchner, Hunter Water, TSA/Evans & Peck, DLA PhillipsFox, and KPMG.

“The new facilities at Potts Hill comprise a two storey campus style office, a maintenance depot and warehouse storage for about 450 field based staff, and has been one of our more significant accommodation improvement projects.

“The buildings reflect a high standard of sustainable design and the value Sydney Water places on water and energy conservation, heritage, and the workplace environment. A number of staff have made a positive contribution to the change required in the development of this contemporary new facility which has been recognised by this prestigious award.”

“Sydney Water’s work on the Potts Hill project was supported by our project partners including Brookfield Multiplex, Bates Smart Architects, Alan Smith Consulting and Landcom.”

“Both projects will now go forward in their respective categories for the National AIPM Awards.”
