This is in addition to a $65 million contract announcement, to design and construct a new premium railway station and associated infrastructure works for the Victorian State Government’s Department of Transport at Williams Landing on the outskirts of Melbourne.

The Defence contract awarded is for the first phase of a two phase project which involves a combination of new and refurbished facilities on 10 Defence sites around Australia, as the new Joint Strike Fighter F-35 Lightning II jets are phased in.

The bulk of the work is proposed to occur at RAAF Bases Williamtown, north of Newcastle, and Tindal, in the Northern Territory. Additional work is proposed for eight other RAAF bases located at Townsville, Amberley, Scherger on the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, Learmonth, Curtin, Pearce in Western Australia, Edinburgh and Darwin.

Abigroup’s Managing Director, David Jurd said, “The award of this major national Defence contract for the Federal Government is a sign of Abigroup’s increased capability in this sector. The contract will be carried out in two phases, the first phase or planning phase - which has just been awarded - will last two years and consists of the preliminary design and costing of the project.”

The second phase – which will last six years - is subject to final Federal Government confirmation and Parliamentary approval. With a scheduled commencement date of mid- 2013, the second phase will consist of finalisation of the design and then construction of the works.

As well as the new railway station required for the Williams Landing rail project, works include the Palmers Road overpass, a pedestrian bridge over the Princess Freeway to Geelong, bus and taxi facilities, a carpark and rail track plus signalling realignment works.

Abigroup’s Southern Region General Manager Vin Vassallo said, “We’re delighted to have won this major project which will see us manage the total design and construction of the new railway station and associated works. It demonstrates the versatility of Abigroup’s diverse skills which will be delivered from our in house integrated capability.”

The project is located between the existing Aircraft and Hoppers Crossing stations on the Werribee line adjacent to the Princes Freeway; and will serve the growing populations of Williams Landing and Point Cook.
