Coming to grips with safety on the road
|
A new type of highly skid-resistant road surface is being trialled for the first time in the Far North on the Captain Cook Highway, the two year trial on the MacGregor Road and Caravonica roundabouts aims to cut the number of incidents caused when drivers travelling too fast around the roundabout lose control of their vehicles, crashing into the roadside. |
|
The new road surface being trialled is a Calcined Bauxite treatment; it is a treated aggregate material which keeps its rough edges giving drivers extra grip.
The Calcined Bauxite is an extremely hard form of aggregate and so retains those edges sharp or rough edges for the life of the treatment, and therefore offers a cost-effective solution for managing low-grip environments.
The treatment project has already been highly successful in improving safety on road surfaces in other areas of Queensland. It is designed to improve traction directly between tyres and the road surface, reducing the likelihood of vehicles sliding and losing control.
The trial will be monitored over a two year period to measure the impact of the treatment on vehicular activity in the area.
