Winners in Category One – Treloar Transport
Project: Maria Island bridge and dam repair project
Maria Island is 100 square kilometres in area and is a national park in its entirety. It lies off the east coast of Tasmania and is mountainous and remote, being sixteen kilometres by boat from the small fishing town of Triabunna.
The works included:
Construction of five culvert-type road bridges and repair of a convict-built stone bridge abutment, in a heritage-sensitive manner. Repairs to the downstream dam embankment of the island’s water supply dam were also necessary, as was clearing the dam’s spillway of silting and debris.
The dam embankment also had to be raised 750mm and the existing pedestrian bridge over the spillway had to be removed and replaced at a higher level. This project remedied defects caused by flash flooding to ensure the long term sustainability of Maria Island as a National Park and tourist destination.
Winners in Category Five - John Holland / Hazell Bros Group, JV
Project: Midland Highway Brighton Bypass Project - Southern Section
The Brighton Bypass is the largest road infrastructure project ever undertaken in Tasmania with a total of 9km of dual carriageway constructed on the Midland Highway, bypassing Brighton and the historic settlement of Pontville, north of Hobart.
The Midland Highway is Tasmania’s major north-south transport corridor and is a key transport route in the National Land Transport Network, the Brighton Bypass Southern Section Project significantly improves connections to the developing Brighton Industrial Estate and the Brighton Transport Hub.
The project involved the design and construction of a 3.4km section of the Midland Highway. Highway works included grade-separated interchanges to serve the Brighton township and its industrial estate, with two road overpasses and two rail underpass structures at road and rail crossings for Tasmania’s main north/south rail line.
The main rail line was realigned and upgraded and roundabouts were constructed at the East Derwent/Midland Highway junction and the Brighton interchange.
A comprehensive overview of the winning projects will be available in the August, September, October and November issues of The Earthmover & Civil Contractor magazine.
