Installation underway on $26.9m Woolner substation

Power and Water Corporation has commenced the installation of the new $26.9m Woolner zone substation as part of the record $1.8 billion upgrade to the Northern Territory’s power network. |
|
Inspecting the works today, Minister for Essential Services, Rob Knight, said the new substation is set to replace the one in Snell Street, which is approaching the end of its operational life.
“The Woolner zone substation uses Gas Insulated Switchgear and will have all equipment housed indoors allowing for greater security, better environmental impact outcomes and will be more resistant to our Territory’s extreme weather conditions,” said Minister Knight.
The Woolner zone substation is expected to have a 50 year life span and will supply the suburbs of Winnellie, Fannie Bay, Parap, Stuart Park and The Gardens. It will also support the City, Casuarina and Berrimah Zone Substations.
The installation of the new substation directly contributes to the Territory 2030 target for long-term infrastructure planning for roads, power, water, sewerage and telecommunications.
Power and Water has recently completed a two-year program to upgrade and repair zone substations, finalising a major upgrade at the Casuarina zone substation and have commenced replacing City and Snell Street zone substations.
